Firefox to Add “Not Secure” Warning to Non-SSL Pages
In its upcoming build 70, Firefox will incorporate a “Not Secure” warning for non-SSL pages. This warning will appear to the left of the address, where the company-branded green address bar appears on sites with EV SSL certificates.
This warning follows a very similar interface decision Google made with its Chrome browser earlier this year.
The development makes perfect sense. In the early days of the web, limited bandwidth and available computing power caused site operators to restrict use of SSL certificates only to the specific pages that received or shared confidential information such as credit card numbers, personally identifiable information, or login credentials.
Fortunately, those days are behind us, and it’s now practical to enable encryption on all web pages. This latest development from Firefox continues the industry’s march toward full encryption of all web traffic, which improves the overall state of internet security with no material downside.
