Going into 2022, almost everyone on Earth was convinced it would be a long time before generative AI in anything approaching its current form would be ready for widespread use. That includes Bill Gates, who got an early glimpse of OpenAI’s ChatGPT that June, deemed it an “idiot savant,” and concluded it would be a good three years before he had to think about the topic again.
