Overview

By the end of this article, your hosting provider will allow CodeGuard to reach your MySQL database, and CodeGuard database backups will connect successfully. The article explains what whitelisting means in this context, lists what you need before you start, gives the CodeGuard IP addresses for each region (United States, Germany, United Kingdom, and France), walks through requesting the change from your hosting provider or applying it yourself through the Remote MySQL option in your host control panel, and describes how to confirm the connection works. It also covers the shared-hosting restriction that prevents remote MySQL access on some plans.

What is IP whitelisting for MySQL?

IP whitelisting is a hosting setting that lists the IP addresses allowed to connect to your database from outside the hosting server. CodeGuard connects to your MySQL database from a fixed set of IP addresses, so those addresses must be on the list before a database backup can run. If they are not listed, the hosting provider blocks the connection and the backup fails.

Prerequisites

  • An active CodeGuard account with a website or database added.
  • Access to your hosting account, or the ability to raise a support request with your hosting provider.
  • A hosting plan that permits remote MySQL connections. Some providers disallow remote MySQL on shared hosting accounts.

Steps

Step 1 — Identify your region

Check which CodeGuard address you sign in to, then use the matching row in the table above. Whitelisting only the addresses for your region is sufficient.

Step 2 — Add the IP addresses in your host control panel

If your host control panel includes a Remote MySQL option, open it and add the CodeGuard IP addresses for your region as allowed hosts, then save the change.

Step 3 — Or ask your hosting provider to whitelist them

If your control panel has no Remote MySQL option, contact your hosting provider and ask them to whitelist the CodeGuard IP addresses for your region so that remote MySQL connections are not blocked. The exact procedure differs between hosting providers, so check your provider's support documentation for their specific instructions.

How to verify success

Return to CodeGuard and run a database connection or backup for the affected database. A successful connection confirms the IP addresses are whitelisted. If the connection still fails, ask your hosting provider whether remote MySQL access is permitted on your plan — several providers disable it on shared hosting accounts regardless of the whitelist.
