What do the different roles mean when inviting clients to view a website?

Overview

By the end of this article, you will know which role to assign when you invite someone to view a website in CodeGuard and what that person will be able to do.

Every website has an Owner, the person who added it, who has full control. Using the Client Access feature, an Owner can invite other people in one of two roles:

Administrator – Has the Owner's abilities apart from deleting the website.
Client – Can view the website and its backups but cannot change it.

The article compares the three roles side by side, explains which role to use for web designers and end customers, and shows how to check the role you hold on a website.

Client Access is available on some CodeGuard plans only. Check the plans and pricing page to confirm your plan includes this feature before inviting anyone.

Owner

The Owner is the person who added the website to CodeGuard. Every website has exactly one Owner, assigned automatically when the website is added.

The Owner has the most control of any role. An Owner can:

Edit the website
Delete the website from CodeGuard
Request backups
Run restores
Change settings
Invite other people to the website
Remove access from other users

Administrator

An Administrator has the same abilities as the Owner, with one exception: an Administrator cannot delete the website from CodeGuard.

This role is suitable for people who need to work on the website day to day, such as web designers and web developers. Administrators can run backups, perform restores, and adjust settings without being able to remove the website from CodeGuard.

Client

A Client can view the website in the dashboard and track its backups but cannot edit the website, change its settings, or delete it.

This role is best suited for end customers. Web designers and developers who manage websites on behalf of clients often assign the Client role so customers can see that their website is protected and monitor backup activity without being able to modify the configuration.

Check which role you have

To see your role on a particular website, open that website's Settings page in your CodeGuard dashboard. Your role is displayed there.

If you need a role changed or access removed, contact the website Owner. Only the Owner can invite people or revoke access.

Which role should I assign?

Web designer or developer – Assign the Administrator role. They can back up, restore, and change settings but cannot delete the website.
Customer who only needs visibility – Assign the Client role. They can monitor backups without being able to make changes.
Anyone who needs to delete the website – No invited role can perform this action. Website deletion is restricted to the Owner.
