What is MalwareGone and how do I activate it?
Overview
By the end of this article, you will understand what MalwareGone checks for and how to request activation for your websites. The article defines MalwareGone, explains how CodeGuard malware monitoring and alerting work alongside ChangeAlert notifications, lists the steps to activate the feature, describes how to verify it is active, and explains what to do when a malware alert arrives.
What is MalwareGone?
MalwareGone is a CodeGuard feature that scans a website for malicious content as part of the CodeGuard backup process. It checks for viruses, trojans, rootkits, spyware, and other malware, and alerts the site owner when any of these are detected. Without a malware scan, an infection can remain on a site unnoticed, which can affect visitors to the site and can lead to the site being flagged by search engines.
How CodeGuard Malware Monitoring Works
CodeGuard checks a website daily as part of its monitoring, and MalwareGone adds a malware scan to that check. Scanning runs when CodeGuard takes a backup of the site, so results follow the site's backup schedule. CodeGuard already sends ChangeAlert notification emails when website content changes; with MalwareGone active, CodeGuard also alerts you when malware is detected, so the two notification types cover different findings.
How to Activate MalwareGone
MalwareGone is activated by CodeGuard support on request; it is not switched on from the dashboard.
- Submit a support request to CodeGuard support.
- State that you want MalwareGone activated on your account.
- List each website you want MalwareGone activated for.
- Wait for support to confirm the activation. Scanning begins at the next backup of each listed site after activation is confirmed.
How to Verify MalwareGone Is Active
MalwareGone is active once CodeGuard support has confirmed your request and a backup has run for the site. Check the support response naming the sites that were activated, then confirm that a backup has completed for each of those sites since that confirmation. If you are unsure whether scanning has started for a particular site, ask CodeGuard support to confirm its status.
What to Do If Malware Is Detected on Your Site
CodeGuard sends an alert when MalwareGone detects malware on a site, and the alert names the site affected. Review the alert, then restore the site to a backup taken before the malware appeared, using the restore function in the CodeGuard dashboard. If you are not sure which backup predates the infection, or if the malware reappears after you restore, contact CodeGuard support.
