How do I back up a GoDaddy cPanel database with CodeGuard?

Overview

By the end of this article, you will have a GoDaddy cPanel database connected to CodeGuard and ready to back up. The article covers the connection details you need to collect, how to create a database user with access to that database in cPanel, how to allow the CodeGuard backup addresses through Remote MySQL, and how to add the database to your CodeGuard account. It also covers how to verify the connection and common troubleshooting situations.

Connection details you need

Collect the following four values before you start. Each one is entered when you add the database to CodeGuard.

DetailWhere it comes from
Database hostname or IP addressUsually your domain name, or the IP address of your server shown in the left sidebar after you sign in to your hosting account.
Database nameThe name of the database you want to back up. If your account holds more than one database, decide which one before you begin — you select it from a list during the process.
MySQL username and passwordA MySQL user with permission to access that database. If you do not have one, create it using the steps in the next section.
MySQL port numberThe port your database listens on.

If you already have all four values, continue to the section on allowing the CodeGuard backup addresses.

Create a MySQL user for the database

If you do not already have a MySQL user with access to the database, create one in cPanel.

  • Open MySQL Databases. In the cPanel dashboard, select the MySQL Databases icon.
  • Create the user. Scroll to the section titled MySQL Users and complete the form to create a new user with a username and password.
  • Assign the user to the database. In the Add User To Database form directly below, assign the new user to the database you want to back up. If your website uses more than one database and you want to back up each of them, assign the user to every one.
  • Set the user privileges. On the privileges page that opens, select the privileges the user requires and save.

Record the username and password you created — you enter both when you add the database to CodeGuard.

Allow the CodeGuard backup addresses through Remote MySQL

CodeGuard connects to your database from outside your hosting account, so remote MySQL access must be permitted before the database can be added.

  • In the main cPanel dashboard, select the Remote MySQL icon.
  • Enter each of the following IP addresses into the input field one at a time, selecting Add Host after each one. All five must be added.
  • 54.236.233.46
  • 54.236.233.28
  • 54.174.91.34
  • 54.174.153.212
  • 54.174.115.171

Add the database to CodeGuard

Sign in to your CodeGuard account and add the database using the hostname or IP address, database name, MySQL username and password, and port number you collected. During the process you select the database you want to back up from the list of databases available on the server.

How to verify the database is connected

After the database is added, CodeGuard starts its first backup. Open the database in your CodeGuard account and confirm the first backup completes. A completed first backup confirms that the remote access and credentials are correct.

Troubleshooting

Issue: CodeGuard cannot connect to the database.
Cause: One or more of the five CodeGuard IP addresses has not been added under Remote MySQL.
Solution: Return to Remote MySQL in cPanel and confirm all five addresses listed in this article are present, then try adding the database again.

Issue: The connection is refused even though the addresses are allowed.
Cause: The MySQL user does not have access to the database you selected, or the username or password is incorrect.
Solution: In MySQL Databases, confirm the user is assigned to that database and has the required privileges, then re-enter the credentials.

Issue: The database you want does not appear in the list during the add process.
Cause: The MySQL user you supplied is not assigned to that database.
Solution: Use the Add User To Database form in cPanel to assign the user to the database, then start the add process again.
