How to whitelist CodeGuard in your HostGator Dedicated or VPS/WHM

Overview

By the end of this article, CodeGuard will be able to reach your HostGator Dedicated or Virtual Private Server (VPS) server, and website and database backups will complete without connection errors. The article lists what you need before you start, gives the CodeGuard IP addresses for each region, and then walks through the three places in Web Host Manager (WHM) where the addresses must be whitelisted: HG Firewall Administration, cPHulk Brute Force Protection, and Host Access Control. It closes with how to confirm the change worked and what to do if connections are still blocked.

Prerequisites

A HostGator Dedicated or Virtual Private Server (VPS) hosting plan.
Root user access to your Web Host Manager (WHM) panel.
An active CodeGuard account with the website or database added.

CodeGuard IP Addresses to Whitelist

Use the addresses for the region your CodeGuard account belongs to. Enter the same set of addresses in all three WHM locations described below.

Step 1 — Sign in to WHM

Sign in to your Web Host Manager (WHM) panel as the root user. All three whitelisting locations are reached from the WHM search box at the top of the left menu.

Step 2 — Whitelist the Addresses in HG Firewall Administration

HG Firewall Administration is the HostGator firewall interface in WHM. It controls which external addresses may reach the server.

Search for HG Firewall Administration in the WHM search box and open it.
Enter one CodeGuard IP address for your region in the address field.
Select Add IP.
Repeat for each remaining address for your region. The firewall accepts one address at a time.

Step 3 — Whitelist the Addresses in cPHulk Brute Force Protection

cPHulk Brute Force Protection blocks repeated login attempts and can block CodeGuard even when the firewall allows it.

Search for cPHulk Brute Force Protection in the WHM search box and open it.
Select White/black List Management.
Add each CodeGuard IP address for your region to the white list, also shown as the trusted IP list.
Save the list.

Step 4 — Whitelist the Addresses in Host Access Control

Host Access Control sets per-service access rules. CodeGuard needs an allow rule for each of its addresses.

Search for Host Access Control in the WHM search box and open it.
Add one line for each CodeGuard IP address for your region, using these values:

Access List	The CodeGuard IP address

Comment (optional)	CodeGuard

Select Save Host Access List at the bottom of the page once every address has its own line.

How to Verify Success

Return to CodeGuard and run a website or database backup for the affected site. A backup that completes without a connection error confirms the addresses are whitelisted in all three WHM locations.

Troubleshooting

Issue: Backups still fail with a connection error after all three locations are updated.

Cause: Another firewall rule elsewhere on the server or network is blocking the connection.

Solution: Contact HostGator support and ask them to identify where CodeGuard connection attempts are being blocked. If HostGator needs further details about the connection, contact CodeGuard support and we will supply them.
