Overview:

This guide explains how to diagnose and resolve the error “StateOrProvinceName is invalid” (or “State name is invalid”) that appears when adding an organization in SCM. The issue typically occurs when entering the State/Province field using a name that does not match the required ISO 3166‑2 subdivision format.

Symptoms:

You may be experiencing this issueWhen adding an organization to your system, if you see the following:

Error message: "StateOrProvinceName is invalid."

Error message: "State name is invalid."

Organization record fails to validate when entering State/Province details

Common state names or local spellings (e.g., “Attica”, “Attiki”) are not accepted by the system

Cause

This error is typically caused by entering a non‑standard or non‑ISO 3166‑2 compliant state or province name. SCM validates state/province values against the ISO 3166‑2 official subdivision names, which may differ from common English spellings.

Example:

This is an example of the issue:

The customer attempted to add an organization with the following details:

City: Athens

State: Attica (also tried "Attiki" and "Attika")

Country: Greece

However, the system returned the error: "State name is invalid."

Solution

Follow these steps to resolve the issue:

The issue was resolved by referencing the ISO 3166-2 subdivision names, which provide the standardized format for state and region names. For Greece, the correct subdivision names are available at this ISO link : https://www.iso.org/obp/ui#home

Steps to Resolve:

Step 1: Open the ISO 3166‑2 Lookup Tool

Access the official ISO subdivision list here:
https://www.iso.org/obp/ui#home

Step 2: Search for the Country

Enter the country name into the search bar (e.g., Greece).
Select the first result that appears.

Step 3: Locate the Official Subdivision Name

Scroll down to the table listing the ISO 3166‑2 subdivisions.
Search for the required State/Province entry.

Example:

Common entry: Attica

ISO‑compliant entry: Attikí

Step 4: Copy the ISO Subdivision Name Exactly

Copy and paste the official subdivision name directly from the ISO website to avoid character or diacritic issues.

Step 5: Re-enter the Organization Information

Replace the State/Province value in SCM with the ISO 3166‑2 subdivision name (e.g., Attikí).

Step 6: Validate the Organization

Submit the form again.
The organization should now pass validation without errors.

Additional Notes:

Always use ISO 3166‑2 subdivision names for State/Province fields when encountering validation issues.

If similar errors occur for other countries, check out their specific ISO 3166‑2 subdivision lists.

Standardizing ISO values ensure consistency and prevent repeated validation failures.
