Domain Cannot Be Validated Error When Adding a Wildcard Domain in SCM Pro
Overview
Users may encounter a “Domain cannot be validated” error while attempting to add and validate a wildcard domain in SCM Pro. This article explains the cause of the issue and provides the correct resolution steps.
Issue Description
When adding a wildcard domain (for example, *.example.com) directly for domain control validation (DCV) in SCM Pro, the validation process fails with a Domain cannot be validated error.
Cause
SCM Pro requires to register and validate the base domain before registering wildcard name. If the base domain has not been validated first, wildcard domain validation will fail.
Resolution
To successfully validate a wildcard domain in SCM Pro, follow the steps below:
- Add and validate the base domain
- Add the base domain (ex: example.com) to SCM Pro.
- Complete the required Domain Control Validation (DCV) for the base domain.
- Add the wildcard domain
- Once the base domain is successfully validated, add the wildcard domain (ex: *.example.com).
- Automatic validation
- The wildcard domain will be automatically validated based on the successful DCV of the base domain.
Important Notes
- Wildcard domains cannot be validated independently.
- Base domain validation is mandatory before adding any corresponding wildcard domains.
- If the base domain validation expires or fails, associated wildcard domains may also be impacted.
Summary
If you encounter a Domain cannot be validated error while adding a wildcard domain in SCM Pro, ensure the base domain is added and validated first. Wildcard domains inherit validation from their base domain and cannot be validated on their own.
