Overview

By the end of this article, your Media Temple Grid Services database will be added to CodeGuard and backing up automatically. The article lists what you need before you start, then covers the three stages of the task: creating a MySQL user with read and write permissions in the Media Temple Grid Control Panel, whitelisting the CodeGuard IP addresses in the External Databases section, and collecting the external hostname so you can activate the database in CodeGuard. It closes with how to confirm the database was added and what to do if the connection test fails.

Prerequisites

• An active CodeGuard account with the associated website already added.
• Media Temple Account Center sign-in credentials with administrator access to the domain.
• A Media Temple Grid Services hosting plan with the database you want to back up.

Stage 1 — Create a MySQL user for CodeGuard

Step 1 — Sign in to Media Temple

Sign in to the Media Temple Account Center at https://ac.mediatemple.net.

Step 2 — Open the Grid Control Panel

Select Admin next to the domain name your database is associated with.

Step 3 — Open Manage Database

In the Grid Control Panel, select Manage Database.

Step 4 — Open Users & Settings

Select Users & Settings to view the database users.

Step 5 — Add the user and grant permissions

1. Select Add User.
2. Create a new MySQL user and note the username and password — you will enter both in CodeGuard later. Media Temple prefixes the name you type with an account-specific string, so the full username is longer than what you enter. For example, typing cguser produces a full username in the form db######_cguser.
3. Select Permissions for the new user.
4. Grant Read/Write permissions and select Save. Read and write access is required so that CodeGuard can both back up and restore the database.

Stage 2 — Whitelist the CodeGuard IP addresses

Add the CodeGuard IP addresses for your region to the External Databases section of the Grid Control Panel. Media Temple blocks connection attempts from addresses that are not listed here, so a database added without this step will fail its backups.

Add every address for your region, not only the first one.

Stage 3 — Collect the external hostname

Return to the Grid Control Panel and select View Your Guide. The guide shows your database's external hostname. Note the hostname — CodeGuard needs it to reach the database from outside Media Temple.

Stage 4 — Add the database in CodeGuard

1. Sign in to your CodeGuard account and select the website your database is associated with.
2. Select Add Database at the bottom of the page.
3. Enter the external hostname from Stage 3 and select Test Connection.
4. Review the connection test result. If any address fails, return to Stage 2 and confirm that every CodeGuard IP address for your region is whitelisted in External Databases. When the test passes, select Next Step.
5. Enter the database username and password created in Stage 1, then select Next Step.
6. Select your database and select Add Database.

How to verify success

CodeGuard displays a confirmation once the database is added, and you can track progress while the first backup runs. CodeGuard sends you an email when the database has finished being added.
