How to export a certificate as PFX file from Windows?

Overview:

This guide provides the step‑by‑step process for exporting an installed certificate as a PFX file (including the private key) from a Windows system. This is typically required when migrating certificates, configuring servers, or creating backups.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure you have the following:

  • Access to the Windows system where the certificate is installed

  • Permission to access Certificate Manager (certmgr.msc or certlm.msc)

  • The private key associated with the certificate (required for PFX export)

Procedure

Step 1: Open Certificate Manager

Open the certificate manager where your certificate is installed.
You can launch it by running one of the following from the Start Menu or Run dialog (Win + R):

  • certmgr.msc for Current User certificates

  • certlm.msc for Local Computer certificates

Step 2:
Locate the Certificate

In the Certificate Manager console:

  1. Expand Personal.

  1. Select Certificates.

  1. Right‑click the certificate you want to export.

  1. Select All Tasks → Export.

Step 3: Start the Certificate Export Wizard

When the Certificate Export Wizard opens, click Next on the Welcome page.

Step 4: Choose to Export the Private Key

Select Yes, export the private key, then click Next.

Step 5: Configure Export Options

Leave the default settings as‑is, or optionally select:

  • Include all certificates in the certification path if possible

Then click Next.

Step 6: Set a Password for the PFX File

Check Password and enter a strong password to protect the PFX file.
Click Next.

Step 7: Choose a Save Location

Click Browse, select the folder where you’d like to save the file, provide a name for the PFX file, and click Next.

Step 8: Complete the Export

A final confirmation screen will appear.
Review your selections and click Finish to complete the export.

Verification

To confirm that the export was successful:

  • Navigate to the location where you saved the PFX file.

  • Verify that the .pfx file exists and opens without errors when imported.
