Troubleshooting: USB Token/Smart Card Not Working on Windows Server 2022 (Switch Driver from UMDF2 to WUDF)
Overview
On Windows Server 2022, the default smart card reader driver may be Microsoft Usbccid SmartCard Reader (UMDF2). Some USB tokens require the WUDF version of this driver to function correctly. This article explains how to switch the device driver so the token is detected and the certificate is accessible in SafeNet.
Applies to
-
Windows Server 2022
-
USB token / smart card device using Microsoft Usbccid SmartCard Reader
Resolution: Change the smart card reader driver
-
Unplug (remove) the USB token from the server.
-
Open Device Manager.
-
Expand Smart card readers.
-
Right-click Microsoft Usbccid SmartCard Reader (UMDF2) and select Update driver.
-
Select Browse my computer for drivers.
-
Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
-
Choose Microsoft Usbccid SmartCard Reader (WUDF) and complete the installation.
Verify
-
Plug the USB token back in.
-
Open the SafeNet application.
-
Confirm that the certificate is visible.
Notes
-
If you do not see the WUDF option in the driver list, ensure Windows has access to the required inbox drivers (and that the device is correctly detected under Smart card readers).
